Ealing Mencap has been successfully delivering Travel Training in Ealing since 2004.  We have grown over the years and have had successful services in both Hounslow and Hillingdon, enabling even more young people to gain independence.  Travelling is an essential life skill; our aim is that all of our students become safe, independent travellers.

Travel Training teaches students with disabilities to travel safely and independently to their school or college by public transport. Our students learn important skills to keep them safe when they are travelling alone.

We work with families to create detailed plans for each student and ensure we continue to update on progress throughout the placement. We follow up with all our students once they are independent to ensure they are staying safe on their journey.

Becoming independent on a journey to school improves confidence and self-esteem. It starts to develop an important life skill, one that is critical for building a life after school or college.

Travel Training on a specific route

Our Travel Trainers work one-to-one with our students, offering person-centred support in a fun and exciting way. We teach our students their route from home to school or college. We travel with them a number of days each week, both to and from school, until they are able to manage their route alone.

Independent travel skills

We teach general travel skills and build confidence. As part of this we cover:

  • Learning a route

  • Road safety
